When David Thewlis worked on his role as a concentration camp commandant in The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, he was given a letter written by Rudolf Hoess to his children, shortly before his execution for Nazi atrocities.
Hoess, the SS commandant at Auschwitz, is considered history's greatest mass murderer. He was responsible for exterminating as many as 2.5million people in World War II.
The letter lay about on the kitchen table at the Hollywood home Thewlis shares with actress Anna Friel and their three-year-old daughter Gracie.
'I had some neighbours over and they started reading it,' says Thewlis.
'When they'd finished it, they turned to me and said: "Oh what a beautiful, heart-rending letter this man has written to his children. Who was he? Was he dying? Was he sick?" To which I replied: "Yeah, he was very sick."
But the letter is clearly written by a man with an intense love for his children; it's very articulate, very touching, almost poetic.
'Try and understand a human being - a sensitive human being - who's capable of this! No way can I find it in myself to justify or forgive, obviously.
But my job was somehow to find the humanity in him, and not to see all these people - as the cliche goes - just as monsters. In my research, I came to learn that my character was very much based on fact.'
The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, a haunting drama adapted from John Boyne's awardwinning novel, centres on the camp commandant's eight-year-old son Bruno, played by Asa Butterfield, who befriends a small Jewish boy in striped pyjamas (Jack Scanlon) on the other side of the camp fence, with tragic consequences.
It's a very different part for Thewlis, who is known mostly for his continuing role as Professor Lupin, the werewolf in the Harry Potter films.
As the Nazi officer whose promotion takes his family from their comfortable house in Berlin to the camp which his young son believes is a sort of farm, Thewlis's character manages to convey both humanity and monstrosity.
He confesses that he was deeply affected by the character, but is also hugely proud, comparing it to his performance as the tortured anti-hero Johnny in Mike Leigh's Naked, for which he won Best Actor at Cannes.
'When you do something well, this is the best job in the world,' he says. 'I've never met anyone who at all resembles the character I'm playing because it's quite unimaginable to understand how one could be a loving father and at the same time leave your children at breakfast, go next door - literally - and spend your time amidst these terrible, terrible atrocities. How do you get your mind around that?'

Dateline Hollywood has learned that the 15 year-old couple privately recorded a steamy 12 minute tape featuring french kissing and an intense make-out session. "Nick goes all the way to first base and almost gets to second -- you can see his hand kind of going up her shirt," said a source close to the Jonas camp who has seen the tape. "There's even a little dry humping near the end. Miley is such a total slut!" Cyrus discusses her time dating Jonas for the first time in the new issue of Seventeen magazine, but doesn't address rumors that the already infamous french kissing tape not only exists, but will soon be sold on the Internet for $29.95 per copy.

Katie Price was seen leaving Berkley East Medical Center after having spent the night to recover from corrective surgery to her breasts after being unhappy with her reduction surgery this past December. The The star wore a loose-fitting white cotton top and designer shades as she left the Berkley East medical center in Beverly Hills. Katie, married to singer Peter Andre, climbed into the passenger seat of an SUV and was driven to the nearby Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

Poor Elvis. Random sightings of the King of Rock 'n' Roll have tapered off in recent years, and now he has mysteriously disappeared from the upper echelons of a new list that ranks the artists with the most No. 1 hits on the U.S. pop singles chart.
Until April, Elvis Presley and Mariah Carey tied at No. 2 on Billboard's list of the top acts of the rock era with 17 No. 1 tunes each, behind the Beatles with 20.
But then Carey took sole possession of the silver medal when her single "Touch My Body" hit the top spot. That should still make Presley No. 3, but not according to Billboard which has demoted him to No. 14 with seven No. 1 hits, a ranking he now shares with Phil Collins.

Samantha Ronson had to work on her birthday Wednesday, but it wasn't all bad – she had Lindsay Lohan by her side!
Seeming inseparable, DJ Ronson, now 31, lit up the turntables while Lohan, 22, stayed close, whispering to her, smoking and holding court at a table of friends inside Los Angeles's Crown Bar.
At promptly five past midnight, the music was silenced and Lohan led the club in a rendition of "Happy Birthday" while presenting Ronson a cake and a lingering kiss.
Between handing out cake to their friends, the gals got cozy in the deejay both and snapped photos of themselves. Lohan spent most of the early morning dancing back-to-back with Ronson, who closed out her set around 1:30 a.m.

Actors Benicio del Toro and Catherine Keener were spotted at Green Door in Los Angeles. According to OK! Magazine, "He whispered into her ear, and she listened with rapt attention. He brushed his hand on her back. They had nice chemistry."
After ending her 17-year relationship with ex-husband Dermot Mulroney last year, Catherine's been keeping a pretty low dating profile.
But quite frankly, after being married for as long as she was as a celebrity,Catherine should be allowed to date whoever she wants. By Hollywood standards, she's practically a widow.

The show which debuted earlier this year on E! started off with good ratings but quickly started to fall and the former Bond girl's bad language is said to be part of the reason people turned off. A source says, "The numbers started out pretty good - just over 1.5 million tuned into the premiere episode. But the audience has dropped off. Denise has turned into an unappealing reality star. Ready to welcome another baby into the world any day now, Gwen Stefani was spotted arriving at a hospital in Los Angeles, California on Thursday (August 7).
The No Doubt frontwoman is pregnant with her second child with her rocker husband Gavin Rossdale, with Gwen’s father-in-law Douglas Rossdale confirming the news back in January.
Just one short year ago, Stefani proclaimed her wish for a brother or sister for her son Kingston - telling how much she enjoys the whole pregnancy process.
The “Hollaback Girl” singer said: “Obviously I’m in a race to have another, but I don’t want to do it while on tour. But I can’t wait to get pregnant again. It’s so fun and consuming and romantic.”

The second episode of Mad Men’s second season dropped, if not in the manner members of the Sterling Cooper prefer their liquor-- to the bottom of a glass.
AMC’s original series, which centers around the professional and personal lives of the aforementioned fictional ad agency in the 1960s, averaged 1.33 million viewers Sunday night, according to Nielsen Media Research, live + same-day data.
The Aug. 3 performance marked a 32% decline from the 1.95 million that tuned in the second-season premiere on July 27. When live + seven-day metrics were applied the sophomore season opener pulled in 2.1 million watchers.
Despite the week-to-week falloff, Mad Men’s Aug. 3 viewer average was still up 45% from its rookie season average of 915,000 watchers.
The first season of Mad Men earned 16 Emmy nominations, including best drama and best actor in a drama for Jon Hamm's portrayal of creative director Don Draper. Source

Yikes, America’s Sweetheart of Journalism is looking a little bit weathered recently. Could it be a few sleepless nights worrying about her position at CBS? Or is it because the channel’s recent decision to switch to HD (despite a whoops moment at launch) makes the anchor look like she’s wearing some sort of Katie Couric Halloween mask?
But television is not film, so while Mad Men might look fantastic in HD, and the outline of Michael Phelps’ bulge at the Beijing Olympics will be on parade for everyone, not everyone can hold up under the scrutiny of digital broadcasting. Let’s zoom in, shall we?

Latest: California health watchdogs are to investigate more staff members at Los Angeles' UCLA Medical Center over their involvement in the snooping into celebrity health records. More than 50 physicians and medical workers at the unit have already been probed over claims they improperly viewed celebrity medical records. One former administrative specialist, Lawanda Jackson, has been indicted for allegedly selling outpatient records to the media. The medical records of stars including Tom Cruise, Farrah Fawcett, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Britney Spears are believed to be at the centre of the ongoing investigation, which was launched after an expose by the Los Angeles Times newspaper earlier this year. But in a new state report, The California Department of Health investigators found that nearly twice as many medical centre employees than previously reported had looked at stars' confidential medical records. It means an additional 60 workers could be investigated. Department of Health boss Kathleen Billingsley says, "What's startling to us is, as we get to a point where we feel we've addressed a specific complaint and a specific issue, we identify additional issues. It's very disturbing to see this."

Ranae Shrider's (sextape costar) legal mouthpiece, Keith Davidson, is raggin' on Verne claiming he can't pay his taxes "because he is paying his lawyer hundreds of thousands of dollars to file ridiculous lawsuits." He cites, among other things, the suit against TMZ for running the sex tape story, which was dismissed.
Davidson calls Verne "a small-minded, vindictive, heartbroken, desperate and trivial celebrity," adding, "Mr. Troyer would be better served retiring his Federal and state tax obligations rather than suing a girl who he dated for only three months before videotaping their diminutive sessions." We've never heard a sex tape called a "diminutive session," but whatever.
Oh yes, and there's this. Shrider's lawyer ends with the following shot: "Ms. Shrider would still like to thank Mr. Troyer for the 'lasting' gifts he has imparted her with." So, what do you suppose he means by that?
